Wei Jia (韦加) B. 1983, Shenyang, China

Here we see young Benjamin Sigg identifying with an artist’s determination to carve out an outstanding reputation for oneself, one that is based on merit, In Wei Jia’s case, as a fine art painter. What Wei does is develop an artistic language that is akin to abstract impressionism. Perceived as an extreme example of contemporary Chinese art, Wei’s art is lucidly influenced by traditional forms of Chinese landscape paintings. Wei manages to communicate through a method of oil and acrylic painting that appears spirit-like. As a result of having trained in lithography, Wei found freedom working with canvas paintings and created an extensive vocabulary of colour and style, which he held at the forefront of the contemporary Chinese art movement. Despite criticism and opposition over the years, Ben shares in the passions of the artist, admiring his ability to invent and reinvent one’s self through the canvas.
